International Film Festival For Children & Young People, Moscow, Russia , September 1997

Joe at St. Basil'sIt was the trip of a lifetime. I couldn't believe it when I got the fax from Russia inviting myself and a guest to accompany Grandpa's Fingers to Moscow. Actor Joseph Callaghan took a leave from his day job as a Criminal Attorney to enjoy the Hotel Savoy and wonderful festival hospitality with me for 10 days. The festival was timed to conincide with Moscow's 850th Anniversary, so the city was all refurbished for the big celebration. Pavorotti, David Copperfield, Yeltsin: they were all there to mark the occassion. We even had our own translator, the wonderful Elizabeth.

After the lavish closing ceremonies, we jumped the overnight train to St. Petersburg, leaving behind the 5 star comforts for a busy youth hostel. The contrast between these two cities was unbelievable, just like the whole trip.

My 89 year old Grandfather still can't believe that he was seen by the Russians.
